Humidifiers, Decoded by the Spec That Actually Matters
Every humidifier box says "covers up to X sq ft" — and that claim quietly assumes a ceiling height, a sealed room, a mild climate, and a target humidity it never states. The spec that's actually physical and comparable across brands is output: gallons per day (GPD) or milliliters per hour (mL/hr). We rank humidifiers by verified output, tank capacity vs. runtime, and filter type — not the sq ft claim printed on the box. We don't publish prices or star ratings, every pick names an honest drawback, and we stick to equipment specs, never health claims.
Existing sizing guides don't even agree with each other on how many GPD a given room size needs — see our dataset comparing published sizing guides for the numbers. That disagreement is itself evidence that no single authoritative sizing reference exists, which is exactly why we built the Humidifier Output Index: a normalized spec table for popular current models, with output in both GPD and mL/hr, the manufacturer's claimed sq ft coverage next to the room volume that output actually supports, and tank capacity next to the runtime that output implies.

How we work
We're a research-based site: we analyze manufacturer specification sheets, cross-check published output and runtime figures against each other for internal consistency, and clearly label anything we calculate ourselves as derived rather than manufacturer-stated. We name a drawback on every pick, never publish prices or star ratings, and report equipment facts — output, tank capacity, filter type — never health outcomes. Read our full methodology →
