The "covers up to X sq ft" claim

A humidifier's coverage claim silently assumes a specific ceiling height, a sealed room with minimal air exchange, a specific outdoor climate, and a specific target relative humidity — none of which the box states. GPD vs mL/hr

Manufacturers split between rating output in gallons per day and milliliters per hour. The conversion is fixed: 1 gallon = 3,785.41 mL, so any mL/hr figure times 24, divided by 3,785.41, converts to GPD. Full breakdown at GPD vs mL/hr, Explained.

Tank capacity vs. output

Tank capacity and output rate measure different things. A bigger tank means fewer refills, not faster humidification — that's determined by the GPD/mL-hr output rate. Several widely-sold tabletop models publish a tank size and a sq ft claim but no output rate at all, which is itself a data gap worth knowing about. See Does Tank Size Mean More Output?.

Published runtime vs. max-output runtime

Published "up to N hours" runtime figures are typically measured at the lowest mist/fan setting, while sq ft coverage claims assume something closer to max output. Dividing tank capacity by the max-output rate — a calculation we perform and label as derived — usually yields a runtime far shorter than the advertised headline number. Evaporative vs. ultrasonic vs. warm mist

Evaporative humidifiers pull air through a wet wicking filter; they're self-limiting and produce no visible mist, but the wick is a recurring consumable. Ultrasonic humidifiers vibrate water into a fine mist with no filter, but aerosolize dissolved minerals — hence hard-water white dust. Warm-mist (boiling) humidifiers need no filter and self-sterilize the water as they heat it, at the cost of higher electricity use and a hot reservoir. Wicking filter replacement

A wicking filter's real replacement interval depends on local water hardness and daily runtime far more than on a fixed calendar estimate — visible scale buildup or a musty smell both mean it's overdue regardless of the manufacturer's "per season" suggestion. Hard-water white dust

Mold risk and tank cleaning
