Humidifier Sizing Guides Compared
Three published, reputable humidifier sizing guides — Blueair, PickHVAC, and HumidityAtHome — give different GPD recommendations for the same room size. At roughly 300 square feet, the guidance ranges from about 1.0 to 2.0 GPD, a 2x spread. That disagreement is itself direct evidence that no single authoritative sizing reference exists for room humidifiers.

The finding, spelled out
Look at the middle three rows: for a room around 300 square feet, Blueair's guidance implies roughly 1 GPD is enough, HumidityAtHome's 300-800 sq ft bracket calls for 1.0-1.5 GPD, and PickHVAC's overlapping 250-500 sq ft bracket calls for 1.5-2.0 GPD. None of the three guides is transparently wrong — but none of them states the ceiling height, climate, target relative humidity, or air-exchange rate its number assumes, so a reader comparing all three has no way to know which assumption set applies to their own room.
Caveats — read before citing a number
- Brackets are not identical across sources — we've placed each guide's stated bracket next to the closest overlapping one from the others; exact boundaries differ.
- The Blueair figure is not bracket-based — Blueair states a flat "1 GPD for most bedrooms" without a sq ft range, so we mapped it to ~300 sq ft for comparability; treat that mapping as our own approximation, not Blueair's.
