How We Evaluate Humidifiers
Humidifier Decoded is a research-based site. We do not physically test humidifiers ourselves; instead, we analyze manufacturer specification sheets and cross-check them against major retailer listings (Sylvane, Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, brand direct sites) where the manufacturer page is incomplete.
What we check for
- Internal consistency — we divide tank capacity by the published max output rate and compare that to the manufacturer's advertised runtime, flagging when the two numbers imply different operating settings (this is nearly always the case, and we say so explicitly).
- Manufacturer vs. derived figures — any number we calculate ourselves, rather than one the manufacturer states directly, is labeled "derived" throughout the site and datasets. We never present a derived estimate as a manufacturer specification.
- Missing specs — when a manufacturer or retailer publishes a tank size and sq ft claim but no output rate, we mark that field "not published" rather than estimating a number we can't verify.
What we don't do
- No prices or star ratings. We link out via tagged Amazon search URLs, never a specific ASIN, and never display or imply a price.
- No invented specifications. Every output, tank, and coverage figure traces to a cited manufacturer or retailer source, or is explicitly labeled as our own derived calculation.
- No health or medical claims. We report equipment specifications and cite building-science humidity guidance (EPA, AHAM) as facts, never as advice about any individual's health, and we never claim a humidifier treats, prevents, or relieves any condition.
- An honest drawback on every pick. Every product we cover names at least one real limitation, not just its strengths.
Corrections & versioning
Our datasets (the Humidifier Output Index and
Sizing Guides Compared) are versioned. If a manufacturer
updates a specification, a model is discontinued, or we find an error, the live page and its CSV downloads
are updated in place and the version number and date are bumped. Version-pinned CSV snapshots (e.g.
-v1.0.csv) remain available so any citation of a specific version stays reproducible.
